About FETCH a Cure
All proceeds from Doggie & Me will benefit FETCH a Cure, a local animal non-profit organization. FETCH works to bring our community education programs about prevention and ongoing awareness for early detection and treatment of pet cancer, in addition to senior care for our pets.
It’s a shocking statistic: more than 6 million dogs and cats will be diagnosed with cancer this year – in fact, our companion animals have a higher incidence of many types of tumors than humans do: dogs develop 35 times more skin cancers than humans, eight times more bone cancers, four times more breast tumors and two times more leukemia. Cancer is the cause of death in 47% of dogs and 32% of cats.
With nearly 100 types of animal cancer, the disease is typically found in the bones, skin, breast, head & neck, lymph system, abdomen and testicles. Leukemia is the most common cancer in cats while lymphoma and mammary gland cancers are the most common type of dog cancers.
Dogs and humans are the only two species that suffer from lethal prostate cancers. And our bond is closer than you might think: breast cancer in dogs tends to spread to their bones – that’s the same way it affects women. Osteosarcoma, the most frequent bone cancer diagnosed in dogs, is the same one that often strikes teenagers. There are so many similarities in how cancers develop in our companion animals that studying veterinary cancer cases can enhance our understanding of the progression and treatment of cancer in people. Is there no end to how beneficial our companion animals are to our lives?
Plan to come to The Shops at Willow Lawn for Doggie & Me on Saturday night and have a great time while you help fund pet cancer education and treatment for our local region. We hope to see you there!
