Raised in Sarasota Florida, Merrin Overbeck received her bachelor’s degree from the American University in Washington, D.C. She majored in Interdisciplinary Studies: Communications, Legal Institutions, Economics, and Government and double minored in Business Administration and Law and Society. During her undergraduate studies, Merrin had the opportunity to study abroad in Madrid, Spain to study legal philosophy and practice her Spanish.

After graduation, Merrin moved to Richmond to attend law school at the University of Richmond School of Law, to which she received a full-tuition merit scholarship. While a student there, Merrin served as a staff member on the Journal of Law and Technology.

Prior to practicing workers’ compensation law, Merrin worked as a law clerk at Carmax while completing her second and third years of law school. Her in house counsel experience provided her with the opportunity to conduct legal research on a variety of different topics and sharpen her legal skills. She also worked at the Richmond and District of Columbia’s Public Defenders’ offices and the Virginia Department of Medical Assistance Services, both of which helped her recognize her passion for assisting those who suddenly find themselves in an unfamiliar legal environment.

Interacting with clients and using her skills and interests in the legal field is what drew Merrin to pursue client-centered work. Merrin is excited to begin using her academic and professional experiences to represent the clients of Commonwealth Law Group.

In her free time, she enjoys traveling, reading, spending time with her friends and family, listening to music and playing piano, and exploring Richmond.
